Patrick Symmes, a University of Michigan Knight-Wallace Fellow in journalism, will discuss his forthcoming book on the global authoritarian movement. With a focus on Venezuela, Brazil, the Philippines, and the USA, Symmes will discuss the global context of today’s populism, the role of symbolic violence in majoritarian democracies, and his reporting from inside Latin American insurgency movements.
Patrick Symmes has published articles in numerous venues, including Outside and Condé Naste Traveler. He is the author of three books: Chasing Che: A Motorcycle Journey in Search of the Guevara Legend, The Boys from Dolores: Fidel Castro’s Classmates from Revolution to Exile, and The Day Fidel Died: Cuba in the Age of Raúl, Obama, and The Rolling Stones, all with Vintage Press.
