Until the last few years, Turkey has been one of Europe’s strongest Middle East allies and a potential member of the EU. As Turks navigate between Western liberalism and authoritarian nationalism, they also must attend to the realities of immigration, the position of its ethnic minorities, and a desire for democratic freedoms. Are these tensions new? And what in Turkey’s history can help us understand these contemporary developments?
