The Art History/Classics Europe program offers students the opportunity for intensive, on-site study of art, architecture, and the classical tradition, with a particular emphasis on ancient (“classical”) Greek and Roman culture in Italy, Greece, Berlin, Aachen, Trier, Paris, and London. Among other places, we will be studying Rome, Pompeii, Paestum, Florence, Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa, Athens, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, and Thessaloniki. We will also be studying the art and architecture of churches of various periods in many of these cities and study art in dozens of museums including the Vatican Museum, the Museo Nazionale Romano, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Uffizi, the National Archaeological Museum and Acropolis Museum in Athens, the site museum at Olympia, several museums in Berlin including the Pergamon Museum, in Paris the Louvre, and in London the British Museum.

Students will register for 6 credit hours during the program from the following courses:
ARTHC 492R, section 1 Special Topics: Art and Architecture of the Ancient World (3 credit hours)
ARTHC 492R, section 2 Special Topics: Art and Architecture in Europe, Medieval to Modern. (3 credit hours)
CL CV 241 Greek and Roman Mythology (3 credit hours)
CL CV 340R Topics in Classical Literature and Civilization (3 credit hours)
Participants may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program directors and ISP.
COST
$5,600–5,900
Includes Latter-day Saint, undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), housing, transportation within Europe, admissions, and international health insurance coverage.
Not included: airfare to and from program, most meals, and personal expenses
PREPARATION
It is expected that participating students will have completed ARTHC 201/202, IHUM 201/ 202, or CL CV 201 and some other (e.g. CMLIT or IHUM 202) prior to leaving for Europe.
Accepted students are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2020. Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Limited scholarships are available for majors in the College of Humanities.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).

Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.

FACULTY
Mark J. Johnson is a specialist in Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval art history and has led several study abroad programs to Europe.
Roger Macfarlane specializes in the study of classical literature and culture and has directed the BYU London Centre and several other study abroad programs.
Macfarlane and Johnson team up for their sixth study abroad together since 1993.
SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
Students should plan to be with the group in Europe from 28 Apr to 13 Jun and refrain from scheduling late arrivals or early departures. Family and friends are welcome to join students after the program ends.
