The city of Cambridge is a beautiful and fascinating place in which to live, work, and study. Students can look forward to punting on the River Cam, attending choral performances, sampling the delights of the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival, participating in High Tea and Formal Hall, and making lifelong friends among fellow participants in the programme, all coming from the best universities in the world.
DATES
27 June–24 July 2021
HOUSING
Students are housed in single rooms on-site at Girton College. Two meals a day are provided on-site during the program, as well as a welcome buffet, two formal dinners, and an English afternoon tea.
COURSES AND FACULTY
The Economics Summer Programme at Girton College is a direct enrollment program (DE), which means it is an independent international experience in which students immerse themselves in a foreign campus with other international students for a term. Thus, participants can expect a robust academic environment and diverse social milieu.
Students will take a course entitled “A Global History of Contending Economic Thoughts and Paradigms.” This course will include a microeconomic component based on the work of Nobel Prize winners and a macroeconomic component from a historical perspective. (For the course syllabus, visit www.girton.cam.ac.uk/economics-summer-programme). BYU economics students will concurrently receive Econ 213R (3 credit hours) credit for the course.
COST
$6,500-7000 (final cost TBA)
This includes BYU undergraduate tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), international health insurance, housing, and approximately ten meals per week. Not included are airfare ($1,500–2,000), passport/visa fees, local transportation, and personal expenses.
The Economics Summer Programme offers a variety of social activities for students, led by program assistants who are themselves current Cambridge students. These activities include local tours and a day trip to London (included in the program fee). All students on the program also have the opportunity to travel on the weekends at their own expense.
PREPARATION
After having submitted applications to the Kennedy Center and the Economics Summer Programme at Girton College, accepted students are required to participate in a 1 credit hour international, cross-cultural preparation course. This evening course will be held second block during winter semester 2020. Satisfactory completion of the course is required.
An accompanying spouse will need to be a credit-bearing participant in the program. Spouses apply online and take the preparation course, like all other students. BYU students are expected to keep all aspects of the BYU Honor Code and ISP rules during the program.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs. Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/student/scholarships).
Finally, the BYU Economics Department has an Experiential Learning Grant up to $2,000 available for participating students. These grants are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Application materials are available at economics.byu.edu.
