Discover the culture and diversity of Belize through an amazing immersive experience. This two-week study abroad program provides students with the opportunity to understand how the people of Belize view the world and use culture and religion to inform their lives. This will be an active and exciting experience where you have the opportunity to visit ancient Mayan sites and climb to the top of pyramids, go into sacred caves where ancient rituals were performed, and swim among some of the most beautiful barrier reefs in the world. Students will have the opportunity to visit some of Belize’s most famous and sacred sites. From the archaeological sites of Lamani, Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, and Xanantunich to the islands along the largest barrier reef in this hemisphere, students will be immersed in an experience that will expand their understanding of the Belizean culture and gain an appreciation for specific political, social, economic, and religious practices that contribute to healthy family development.
There will be an opportunity to provide service to a few local schools as well as experience family life within Mayans, Creole, Latino, Garifuna, and Mennonite cultures. The students will learn by interacting with wonderful individuals and families from these diverse and rich cultures; these experiences and exposure to different cultures will help students broaden their understanding of how healthy families interact around the world. An advantage of the Belize experience is that it is the only English-speaking country south of the U.S. border so students will not have difficulty understanding people in these different cultures.
