Two big questions loom over the United Kingdom: Will the UK leave the European Union? And what will happen to the UK’s own five hundred year old union in the British Isles? Looking across the continent, the question of a “Brexit” looms large, mixing into questions about the membership of other countries as well. At home, a UK referendum on continued EU membership will be shaped by the refugee crisis, Eurozone economic concerns, and domestic politics.

Sir Michael Leigh is senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund (GMF) of the United States in Washington, D.C. Since 2011, Leigh has led GMF’s project on Eastern Mediterranean energy, which focuses on the geopolitical implications of gas discoveries in the region. He has also written and lectured extensively on the future of the EU and the eurozone, enlargement and eastern partnership (particularly Ukraine), Turkey’s relations with the EU and their common neighborhood, as well as Europe’s response to political change in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
