“Messianism—Jewish and Christian Perspective”

This course will explore the ancient Messianic idea, its spatial expansion, and its ideational development up to the present. The topic will be approached from a wide variety of disciplines (political science, history, philosophy, anthropology), sharing a common focus on the Messiah as a central and enduring symbol of Jewish and Christian societies and their interconnected eschatological expectations. The main aim and objective of this course is to provide a solid knowledge of the role of Messianism in shaping Jewish and Christian traditions in order to relate this knowledge to phenomena in modern society and thought, create the ability to evaluate the ongoing relevance of the Messianic traditions in modern thought and politics, and identify the religious dimensions in seemingly secular ideologies and movements. SWSEEL, Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European, and Central Asian Languages
1st through 6th year Russian, as well as varying levels of East European and Central Asian languages

This year, we are offering: Azerbaijani 1-2, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian 1, Czech 1, Georgian 1, Hungarian 1, Kazakh 1-2, Macedonian 1, Mongolian 1, Pashto 1-2, Polish 1, Romanian 1, Russian 1-6, Tajik 1-3, Turkmen 1-2, Ukrainian 2, Uyghur 1-3, and Uzbek 1-2.

This summer at SWSEEL will be the 60th annual workshop, offering intensive, multi-faceted language instruction. The program is 8-weeks long, and offers the equivalent of one year of college language credit. The workshops give students a chance to immerse themselves in the language and culture they are studying through innovative classes, movies, lectures series, and cultural events. There is also a four week option available.

The Bard-Smolny Summer Language Intensive (SLI) provides challenging courses for students who have completed between two and six semesters of college-level Russian, or its equivalent.* A short assessment is used to gauge your level at the time of application.  Students may choose to enroll for 4 or 8 weeks.
