The islands of Vanuatu are located in the Pacific Ocean between Northern Australia and Fiji. Vanuatu is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the world with over one hundred spoken languages across the eighty-three islands. Biologically it is a wonderland of scattered tropical islands where the ocean seamlessly meets beach and tropical forest. It has a fauna and flora that is heavily influenced by Australia and the surrounding islands (e.g., Fiji and Solomon Islands) with many known endemics and others waiting to be discovered. It is a place for students to effortlessly experience rich culture, adventure, and biology. Students involved in the Vanuatu study abroad will combine coursework and mentored research. Research will focus on the evolution of damselflies and fireflies, and students will travel between multiple islands in the archipelago to document the species present and their distribution and behavior. The study abroad is designed to not only provide a completely unique mentored research experience but to also result in peer-reviewed publications with student authors.
