The Department of French and Italian is organizing a unique study abroad to Senegal and Morocco for spring 2017. The purpose will be to provide experiential learning opportunities in two very different parts of the Francophone world: West Africa and North Africa. To accommodate the demands on your French, the program will be highly selective: students must have completed French 321 or equivalent prior to departure. In both Senegal and Morocco, you will live with host families, study with experts in their fields, travel to exotic places, and do some volunteer work.
Topics of study include history and geography of both regions, oral tradition to literature, Islam in both Black Africa and in the Maghreb, ethnic identities, women’s roles, education, and contemporary social and political issues. All classes will be taught in French.
