Global Health Internship Spring 2018
Gain an international perspective of global health and health care, discern if a career in health care is right for you, fine-tune your health care career interests, and explore scenic and historical locations and culture in beautiful Portugal! Students will spend about twenty-five hours per week shadowing European doctors in hospitals, explore different medical specialties, and see the European healthcare system from the inside. Outside of the hospital, students will broaden horizons by exploring Portugal, opting to serve as volunteers in pediatric or geriatric units, or by teaching the locals English. Students will participate in educational activities designed to examine and compare various international health systems including European and U.S. systems of care.
The program is an excellent opportunity for those thinking about a career in medicine, nursing, allied health, health care systems or administration, public health, or health care policy. This internship provides an opportunity for those with Portuguese-language proficiency to practice and improve their Portuguese language ability; however, Portuguese-speaking ability is not a prerequisite.
The program location in Portugal is anticipated to be in Cascais, Coimbra, or Lisbon, where students will shadow doctors in the hospital and also participate in local cultural and recreational excursions. These locations are fantastic sites to be in while in Portugal and ideal locations for day trips to many of Portugal’s cultural and scenic treasures. The picturesque and charming city of Cascais is located just 20km from Lisbon, while the vibrant city of Coimbra, home to Portugal’s leading university, is a few hours north of the country’s largest city of Lisbon. BYU is partnering with the Atlantis Project to provide this opportunity in 2018.
