The Department of Art will investigate relationships in tradition through art, craft, and culture during summer term 2017. Faculty in this program will be teaching process and craft as a bridge between historical western art and the practices and continuums of contemporary art. Professor Brian Christensen will focus on sculpture, installation, and ceramics; Professor Daniel Barney on fiber, textiles, glass, and social practice; and Professor Cassandra Barney on watercolor and other sketch media. Siena, Italy, is an ideal location for experiencing the old and the new in close conjunction. Our travels will also take us to Rome, Florence, Pompeii, and Venice to study working with glass, ceramics, paint, stone, and textiles. Contemporary Italy seeks to preserve the past while continually expanding the new through seeking experiences in living that are exquisitely beautiful.
