General
Information
The
Kennedy Centers International Study Programs office and BYU colleges
and academic departments offer significant international learning experiences,
designed to develop general global competency in areas of language,
history, humanities, art, religion, health, and politics of a given
society, nation, or region. International Study Programs are overseen
by faculty directors, who accompany the groups in most cases, or who
are actively involved in all phases of the program. There are four types
of International Study Programs:
Study Abroad: A uniform program of study for students at an
off-campus, international location with a strong curricular theme.
International Volunteers: A combination of service and
learning in a field setting where, through significant service experiences,
students apply classroom principles to real-world problems.
International Internships: On-the-job apprentice training
providing students with practical application of classroom theory
completed at BYU in Provo. May be combined with limited service opportunities
of the student s choosing.
International Field Studies: Small numbers of students
in groups or independent students, who undertake a research experience
under the direction of a faculty member. This includes extensive pre-departure
cultural preparation provided under the direction of Kennedy Center
personnel, faculty advisors, and consultants.
Academic
Requirements
Each
international study program has its own minimum course requirements.
Students participating in Study Abroad and International Volunteer programs
must enroll as full-time students (twelve credit hours per semester,
six credit hours per term). In most cases International Internships
and International Field Studies students are required to register for
a minimum of six credit hours per term and nine credit hours per semester.
BYU s international study program courses cannot be audited.
ISP
Admission
Admission
to a BYU international study program does not constitute admission to
BYU day school. Non-BYU students may apply and be admitted to an international
study program without being accepted to BYU day school. Continuing BYU
students who have been full-time day school students the semester before
participating on an international study program are considered continuing
students on campus and need not reapply when they return.
Students
from other institutions who are accepted to an international study program
do so without applying to BYU day school. If they subsequently desire
to continue in BYU day school, it will be necessary to follow the formal
application procedures in order to be admitted.
All participants will receive regular BYU credit on a standard transcript.
At the discretion of your home institution, credits earned are transferrable
or applicable toward graduation requirements at Brigham Young University.
Preparation
Course
All
students who are participating in a group program for Study Abroad,
International Volunteers, International Internships, and International
Field Studies are required to enroll in a pre-departure semester or
block cultural preparation course. International Internships and International
Field Studies individuals are strongly encouraged to enroll in the preparation
course. For more information, please contact International Study Programs,
280 HRCB, (801) 422-6192.
BYU

study program fees. Application should be made through BYU Financial
Aid, A-41 ASB, (801) 422-4104. You must notify International Study Programs
accounting, (801) 422-3560, of any financial aid or scholarships you

Cancellations
and Refunds
Fees
for late cancellations may add up to thousands of dollars. Please consider
this before committing to an international study program.
Once
you have been accepted into a Study Abroad or International Volunteer
program, if you choose not to participate you must cancel in writing.
All cancellations must be delivered directly to International Study
Programs, 280 HRCB, Provo UT 84602. Cancellations received verbally,
over the phone, or to your program director will not be accepted.
The $25.00 application fee is nonrefundable (unless the program is canceled
by BYU International Study Programs) and is not calculated as part of
the program cost. There will be no refund of the $300 deposit for cancellations
made after the cancellation deadline. Expenses incurred above the $300
will also be charged to the student s account and will remain
due and payable to the university. Students accepted to the program
after the cancellation deadline will have a two-week cancellation grace
period after which the $300 deposit will not be refunded. Additional
fees, if any, will also be withheld.
The
cancellation policy for International Internships and International
Field Studies programs will be discussed upon acceptance.
Mandatory
Health Insurance
Students
enrolled in an international study program are required to maintain
adequate insurance, just as students on campus. The Brigham Young University
Health Plan now includes an enrollment option designed to provide students
with coverage for medical services they may require while off campus.
If
you are already covered by a private insurance company, you must complete
a waiver form to declare exemption from university insurance fees. However,
your insurance must: 1) provide at least 70 percent coverage for all
major medical expenses, including physician, hospital, and ancillary
services; 2) have an individual annual deductible of no more than $500;
and 3) have an annual plan limit of no less than $25,000. If your insurance
meets the above requirements, submit an insurance waiver form to the
Student Health Insurance office by the university s tuition payment
deadline. If it is not received by this date, the student will automatically
be enrolled in the BYU Student Off-Campus Health Plan. For more information
visit the
Student Health Center or call (801) 422-7737.
Airfare
and Passports
Students
accepted into an international study program are required to make their
own travel arrangements to and from the host country. Round trip
airfare is not included as part of the program cost. Students may
make airline reservations through BYU Travel (801) 422-3991, or through
an independent travel agency. Students are responsible to obtain and
complete passport and, if necessary, visa applications. Contact International
Study Programs for more information, 280 HRCB, (801) 422-6192. Students
must update the Personal Information page when the passport number is
received.
Students
With Disabilities
International
Study Programs is committed to providing a working and learning atmosphere
that reasonably accommodates qualified persons with disabilities. If
you have any disability that would impair your ability to complete an
international study program successfully, please contact International
Study Programs, 280 HRCB, (801) 422-6192. Reasonable academic and logistical
accommodations are reviewed for students who have qualified, documented
disabilities. Services are coordinated with the student, program director,
and Services for Students with Disabilities office. If you need assistance,
or if you feel you have been unlawfully discriminated against on the
basis of disability, you may seek resolution through established grievance
policies and procedures. You should contact the Equal Employment office,
D-282 ASB, (801) 422-5895.
Non-Discriminatory
Statement
Admission
to Brigham Young University s International Study Programs is
nondiscriminatory. The university admits persons without regard to gender,
race, creed, religion, national origin, age, or disability who meet
the university s academic requirement; who agree to abide by the
Honor Code and the Dress and Grooming Standards; and who are otherwise
qualified.
Acceptance
Policy
International
Study Programs will not accept applications from applicants on probation
at Brigham Young University, either through the Honor Code office or
for failure to meet certain academic standards. Any applicant who registers
under false pretenses will forfeit all fees paid in connection with
the program and will receive no credit for class work completed. In
the event that the university learns that an applicant has been accepted
into the program on the basis of a false application, as with any student
being dismissed from the program, the university reserves the absolute
right to immediately terminate the applicant s course work with
a UW grade, which will count as an E grade, and return the applicant
to the United States at the applicant s expense.
