Becoming a Member of an IAS Committee
of the Whole
Faculty with interests in a specific international or area studies
program should submit their names and qualifications to their department
chair. The chair reviews and makes recommendations to the college
dean. The dean forwards the faculty names with comments to the IAS
Council chair. The faculty statement of interest and qualifications
could include:
- Courses you have taught that are relevant to the program. These
could be major courses or supporting courses.
- Courses you are willing to teach and are able to teach over
the next five years that would be relevant to the program.
- Scholarly projects (publications, conference presentations,
etc) in which you are involved that are relevant to the program
and could provide appropriate mentoring experiences for students
in the program major.
- Delineation of your other international or area studies interests
and commitments and a statement about which of these you would
prefer as a priority. For example, a faculty member might be interested
in international relations, middle east studies and development.
A department would probably not be able to release a faculty member
to teach and mentor students in all of those programs. Which would
be the priority over the next five years. A faculty member could
possibly be a member of the Committee of the Whole for more than
one program.
- Full or “permanent” part-time faculty (professorial
or professional) status in a specific department, or in the case
of adjunct faculty, a strong statement of support and commitment
from the department.
Responsibilities of Membership in an IAS
"Committee of the Whole"
- Active support of the program activities:
- attend research discussion meetings, lectures, or other program
activities
- participate when asked in panel discussions on area topics
- suggest names for visiting lectures
- encourage students to be involved in program activities
- Respond in a timely fashion to requests for votes and/or input related
to proposals from working committees regarding research, teaching, curriculum,
and study abroad or other program interests.
- Act as advocates and liaisons for the area program in home department.
- Serving in this capacity would take probably less than 10–15 hours
a semester. Program coordinators would be in a position to write letters
to department chairs on the performance of members of the “committee
of the whole” for stewardship evaluations.
- Assignments such as occasional contracted courses for students going
abroad (study abroad, internships, volunteers, field studies) or teaching
special courses or seminars would be negotiated separately with department
chairs.
Responsibilities of Membership in an IAS "Working
Committee"
- Meet the obligations of membership in the committee of the whole.
- Agree to serve on a working committee related to the program (e.g.,
research, teaching, curriculum, study abroad, etc.). That service would
be negotiated and approved by the department chair. Such service may
include:
- Research: assist in establishing a calendar for visiting lectures
and/or visiting
professors each semester; plan and organize research discussions,
make recommendations for funding on research applications
dealing with the program area
- Teaching/Curriculum: assist in establishing a calendar for team-taught
seminars each semester; review curriculum and suggest needed changes
to the committee of the whole, oversee the availability and viability
of elective and required courses, oversee the organization and teaching
of the sophomore and senior seminars
- Study Abroad: Oversee the distribution of contracted courses for
students going abroad (study abroad, internships, volunteers, field
studies) and policies and standards for credit for these courses;
develop options for students, cooperate with the International Study
Programs Office in overseeing the continued growth of the employment
resource centers program.
- Serving in this commitment would entail about 6 to 10 hours per month
and should be seen as the equivalent of a regular department committee
assignment. Program coordinators would be in a position to write letters
to department chairs on the performance of members of the “committee
of the whole” for stewardship evaluations.
- Assignments such as occasional contracted courses for students going
abroad (study abroad, internships, volunteers, field studies) or teaching
special courses or seminars would be negotiated separately with department
chairs.
