Tips to Help you Succeed Academically
1. Your Advisement Center
The advisement center is designed to help you with academic needs, assisting
your progress from the day of orientation through graduation as smoothly
as possible. It is a resource center with information to keep you updated
on the latest campus policies, to help you cut red tape, and to advise
you on all graduation requirements. The front desk receptionist can
help you declare or change a major, assign a faculty advisor, request
a progress report, begin application for graduation, pick up a substitution
form, and answer basic questions.
If you wish to meet with an academic advisor, see hours under Contact
on left menu.
2. Faculty Advisors
You have been assigned a faculty advisor who will advise you on major
classes and career options, helping you progress through your major
program. The advisement center will tell you who that person is or they
will be listed on your major's web page.
3. Useful Publications
Course CatalogPrerequisites, if needed, are listed for
all classes. Also listed are credit hours and number of hours in class
per week.
Class ScheduleLists exactly which classes fill GE requirements,
class offerings for the year, and exam schedules.
Progress ReportYour personal academic information printout
(GE, major, transcript, GPA). Available on Route Y.
Major MAPS (Major Academic Planner)Outline major and GE
requirements, and a suggested four-year curriculum.
4. What Can You Do with an International Relations or Area Studies
Major?
Visit and use the resources available in our International Career Center
in room 238 HRCB. Also, watch for the Liberal Arts Fair in September
and January. Speakers will share expertise in areas such as foreign
service, development, government, law, international business, and more.
Please don't miss this opportunity to see the career possibilities for
our majors.
5. Transfer Students
Be sure to check your Progress Report for GE and major transfer evaluation
of credit from a previously attended school. See the advisement center
for assistance to ensure you and the university are on the same page
concerning your transfer credit.
6. Get Involved!
Depending on your career interests, you will find a variety of clubs
and organizations that may appeal to you. Everything from international
business, foreign service, international development, nongovernmental
and not-for-profit organizations, international organizations, education,
and so much more are housed in the Kennedy Center. See the receptionist
in 273 HRCB for information on student clubs and organizations.
7. Study What You Love
Four years is a long time and studying something you do not particularly
like makes the journey even longer. Get your feet wet and explore different
areas by enrolling in 100-level courses. Talk to professors. Get involved
with clubs and organizations. Create opportunities for yourself by exposing
yourself to different programs like Study Abroad or Washington Seminar.
The more information and understanding you have, the better decisions
you will be capable of making. Don't be afraid if you discover you want
to change directions. Sometimes the scenic route is more valuable than
the straight shot to success.
